Faiz was one of the most celebrated Pakistani Urdu writers of his time. He studied philosophy and English literature in Lahore and finished an M.A. in Arabic. Naqsh-e-Fariyaadi (The supplicants portrait), his first collection of poems, was published in 1941. All his collections are small, and even they contain some unfinished poems. Faiz was the first Asian poet to receive the Lenin Peace Prize, awarded by the Soviet Union in 1962. In 1976 he was awarded the Lotus Prize for Literature.
